'Meteotsunami' Slams Lake Michigan Shore

A storm-driven weather phenomenon known as a “meteotsunami” hit the shore of Holland, Michigan, on Tuesday, June 25, weather officials confirmed to Fox Weather.Meteotsunamis are large waves that are triggered by “air-pressure disturbances often associated with fast-moving weather events, such as severe thunderstorms, squalls, and other storm fronts,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.The National Weather Service confirmed a “minor” meteotsunami at beaches in Holland and Ludington, Fox Weather reported. The storm caused the water to rise several feet on the beach, the Detroit Free Press reported.The phenomenon was captured in timelapse video released by the city of Holland.Parts of western Michigan were hit with stormy weather on Tuesday, as weather officials warned of steep waves, strong winds, and lightning in the region.
