Syrians were seen returning to the war-torn Damascus suburb of Jobar, after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime to Syrian rebels in December. The Jobar neighborhood was
destroyed during intense battles between Assad’s forces and rebels at the start of Syria’s revolution, leaving its buildings in ruins and residents forbidden to return or rebuild for over a decade. Now, following Assad’s defeat, residents have begun
returning to Jobar, sifting through the rubble of their former homes, hosting the first funeral in the neighborhood’s graveyard in
13 years, and starting recovery efforts in the area.Footage here, captured by Syrian video journalist Obada Jbara, shows cleaning efforts beginning in Jobar.“People have started to return to the Jobar neighborhood in Damascus, which the Assad regime completely destroyed. The volunteer team is working to clean up as much as possible,” Jbara told Storyful.According to
reports, Jobar had around 300,000 residents before it was destroyed. Credit: Obada Jbara via Storyful
