Snow and Ice Shut Down Baton Rouge Airport

The Baton Rouge Metro Airport remained closed due to snow and ice on Wednesday, January 22, after a historic snowstorm hit southern Louisiana on January 21.Video from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) shows the two motor graders the department deployed to help clear the runway and taxiways at the airport on Wednesday morning.“As of 9:00 am on Wednesday, the airfield remains closed to all aircraft except for emergency helicopter operations due to heavy snow and ice on most surfaces,” the Baton Rouge Metro Airport said on Facebook.The airport said the closure would remain in effect until 6:00 pm local time.The National Weather Service reported that the Baton Rouge Airport recorded its coldest temperature on record on January 22 when it reached 7 degrees at 6:40 a.m.On Wednesday, the NWS warned that the area would continue to be impacted by icy roads and cold temperatures.
