A child accidentally smashed a 3,500-year-old jar into pieces during a trip to the Hecht Museum in Haifa, Israel, the museum confirmed. The museum said the crockery dated back to the Middle Bronze Age, between 2,200-1,500 BCE. The jar predates the time of King David and King Solomon and is characteristic of the Canaan region. The jar had been on display at the museum without glass, as it said it believes there is “a special charm” in experiencing archaeological finds without any obstructions. The museum said it will continue this tradition despite the incident. The Hecht Museum said the child and his family have accepted an invitation to return to the exhibition for an organized tour and to see the jar after it has been restored.
