Thousands of dead fish appeared on a beach in Arica, Chile on January 25. Authorities investigating the mass die-off suspect hypoxia, or low levels of oxygen in the water. Samples have been taken of the water to determine the cause of the hypoxia and rule out other theories. Authorities are conducting cleanup operations and urge residents not to eat the fish, as they are already decomposing.
