Kharkiv Schoolchildren Begin Classes in Metro Stations

Some schoolchildren in Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv, began the academic year in underground classrooms on Monday, September 4, after metro stations were converted to hold the first in-person lessons since the start of the Russian invasion.Kharkiv, located less than 23 miles from the Russian border, remains a regular target of Russian strikes and students had been taking their lessons online since the war began in February 2022.About 400 students from the first to 11th grades attended classes held inside five metro stations, according to the Kharkiv City Council.This footage shows an opening ceremony held by Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, renovation work being completed, and students arriving at the Universityet metro station, next to Kharkiv National University, at Freedom Square in the center of the city.According to Suspilne, Ukraine’s public broadcasting service, seven classes of about 20 students were taught simultaneously at the Universityet station, with each class distinguished by different colored badges worn by the students.The in-person classes were being held at least two days a week in the metro stations and up to 1,000 children were expected to attend the classes, reports said.
