The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of dwindling food, water, and medical supplies in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), after the M23 rebel group seized the city after engaging in heavy fighting with government forces.Footage captured on January 24 shows crowds of people fleeing the UN-operated Kanyaruchinya internally displaced persons camp on the northern outskirts of Goma, near Mount Nyiragongo, as fighting was being reported in the area and local authorities said the power supplies had been severed.“People are really running out of food, clean water, and medical supplies, and that’s a big concern,” said WFP Spokesperson Shelley Thakral, speaking in Kinshasa on January 31. “So the supply chain has really been strangled at the moment. If you think about land access, air access, when everything is closed down. So our first priority is obviously for staff safety. We want to get back to our operations as soon as security allows us,” Thakral said.WFP said several or their warehouses had been looted, medical services had been overwhelmed, and camps that previously hosted more than 300,000 people were “emptying out as people flee.”WFP’s concerns were echoed by authorities at the nearby Virunga National Park, who on January 31 said the humanitarian situation in Goma was “rapidly worsening” with millions facing displacement, “scarce resources and great uncertainty.” Power lines to Goma and the Nyiragongo territories remained severed, and refugee camps lacked access to clean water, they said. “Food supplies are also running low as routes into the city are blocked. The risk of deadly disease outbreaks is increasing, and women and girls also face increased threats of sexual violence,” they added. Credit: WFP via Storyful
