The remains of a whale whose species is considered the “world’s rarest” washed ashore in Otago, New Zealand on Thursday, July 4,
according to the New Zealand Department of Conservation. These images provided to Storyful by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation show a digger being used to lift the remains of the whale. The department said the whale appears to be a male spade-toothed whale, a species they said is “so rare [that] next to nothing is known about them.”Only six samples of the species have ever been documented, according to the department. The whale is currently in cold storage until the decision is made on what to do with its remains.
