A priest and county councillor in Monmouthshire, Wales, was asked to pull over after he was caught driving while attending a virtual council meeting on October 14.In the livestreamed meeting, Malcolm Lane, a priest in the Officiate in Monmouth and Hereford Diocese and councillor for Mardy, can be seen in a vehicle as he introduces himself on the stream.County Councillor Armand Watts, leading the meeting of the Public Services Scrutiny Committee, immediately commented: “Malcolm, I’ve just got an observation here – are you driving?”“Yeah, I’m driving. I’m actually off to conduct a funeral, but I’m listening intently,” Lane replied.“Wait a minute, one sec,” Watts said, muting the stream while conferring with another councillor.“Malcolm, I’m going to just say, my advice to you, because I’m not sure where you are – obviously you’ve got important business this morning – would be to possibly pull over if you can,” Watts said after a moment of deliberation.“Just turn your camera off maybe,” he added.Lane told local media that he wanted to “listen to the meeting through the audio system on my car.”“I had accidentally omitted to turn the screen off. I just wished to leave the phone on to transmit through the audio system of my car,” he added.“My phone was laid flat on the middle console of the car,” Lane said. “I was about halfway on my journey to Newport when I heard the chairman speak to me and ask if I was driving which was when I realized that I had not turned the screen off. I pulled in when convenient to remedy this situation. I had not taken my eyes off the road until I pulled in so I was driving at all times and my vision of the road was not impaired,” the priest added. Credit: Monmouthshire County Council via Storyful
