Extra-Large Porcupine Gets Careful Checkup at Perth Zoo

Animal care specialists at Perth Zoo had a particularly prickly procedure to perform when its resident Cape porcupine – one of the world’s largest species of porcupine – came in for her latest checkup.Footage shows Noko receiving a “delicate but thorough” examination, including checks on her mobility, X-rays, and blood samples taken for testing.“Health care for such a spikey individual is a delicate task, but no challenge is too great (or quill too prickly) for our expert vet team,” Perth Zoo wrote in a press release.Noko proved to be “the picture of health,” and was awarded with “plenty” of tasty carrots after her procedure, the zoo said.The Cape porcupine is the largest rodent in Africa and splays or rattles its quills to warn off predators, according to Perth Zoo, but “despite popular myth,” is not able to throw its quills.
