A moose that “had broken through the ice into the frigid waters of Lake Abanakee” in New York was rescued by forest rangers and police officers on January 16.The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) said officers arrived and saw the moose surrounded by ice and unable to get out of the water.A bystander had watched the moose walk out onto the lake and fall through the ice around 200 feet from the town beach, NYSDEC said.Rangers in cold-water rescue gear ventured out onto the ice and cut a path for the moose with a chainsaw. The moose was then guided to shallow water near the shore. It walked off into the nearby woods after taking some time to regain its strength.Temperatures were as low as 6 degrees Fahrenheit (-14 Celsius) overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
